The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
