New research indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
