Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
