Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
